Kim earned a political science degree from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. After graduating cum laude in 1983 from American University Washington College of Law, Kim took a job as a federal law clerk in New York City and later worked litigation cases at a private law firm.
In 1988, Kim joined the elite United States Organized Crime Strike Force started by former U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy to root out organized crime and illegal racketeering. She later rose to the position of an assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey in Newark, where she built a reputation as a tough and effective prosecutor for busting corrupt politicians. In fact, she was awarded the United States Department of Justice's highest honor for her prosecutions of two separate corrupt public officials.
From 1999 to 2001, Kim served as assistant attorney general for the State of New Jersey responsible for statewide criminal investigations and oversight of 300 prosecutors and investigators.
As a wife and mother of three, Kim first decided to run for public office because she wanted to solve real problems facing her community and make it a better place to live, work and raise a family. In 2005, she was elected as a commissioner in the Borough of Monmouth Beach. In 2007, Kim became the first woman elected sheriff in Monmouth County’s history, and led the 650-member, $65 million law enforcement agency.
In 2010, Kim was sworn in as New Jersey's first Lt. Governor and 33rd Secretary of State, and was re-elected in 2013.
Kim has spent the past seven years focused on cutting government red tape, recruiting new businesses to New Jersey and helping existing businesses stay and grow. Today, Kim continues to keep New Jersey open for business while managing the states $40 billion tourism industry and overseeing New Jersey’s long-term growth plan for military bases and U.S. Coast Guard installations.
Kim met her husband, Mike, while working at the United States Organized Crime Strike Force on Brooklyn. They married and moved to Monmouth County in 1991. Together they have three children. Their oldest, Kevin, is second lieutenant in the United States Air Force having graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2015. He is presently training to be a fighter pilot at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Michael is a junior at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and Anderson is a sophomore in high school.
The GOP, “Grand Old Party,” first took roots in 1854 with a small group of dedicated abolitionists gathered to fight against the expansion of slavery and in hopes of starting a Party dedicated to freedom and equal opportunity.
