My name is Robert Campbell. I am a 29 year resident of Newport, Cumberland County, a semi retired businessman, and currently the Mayor of Downe Township, Cumberland County. Our Township has a Committee form of Government.
I am a lifelong South Jersey resident, I grew up in Audubon, in Camden County. I spent a major portion of my working career as a principal in an engineering, surveying and site construction business, doing work throughout Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Cumberland counties. From 1966 to 1972, I was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.
Shortly after my arrival in Cumberland County in 1984, I became interested in politics and local government. In 1991 I was appointed to the Housing and Zoning Officer position in Downe Township. My experience in land use, real estate, and construction for all those years gave me an opportunity to give back to the residents of Downe Township and help them through a sometimes quagmire of regulations and bureaucracy to accomplish both their residential and / or commercial goals.
My appointment to the housing and zoning position ended in December of 2008. In 2009 I ran for a seat on the Township committee and won. I was seated January 1, 2010. I became mayor, January 1, 2012, and during the same year, ran unopposed for a 2nd term. I have been seated for my 2nd term, and continue in 2013, as Mayor of Downe Township.
During my four year tenure, as an elected official, I have accepted the responsibility to the voters. I have made it my business to attend as many functions of the local, county, and state governments as possible. By doing so, I have been able to identify some of the problems and issues that are personally affecting the voters and residents of not just Cumberland County, but our entire legislative district.
In order to broaden my experience base with the legislative process, over the past 2 years, I have, and continue to serve on the NJLM legislative committee, the NJCM legislative committee, and I sit on the subcommittee for Sen. Weinberg’s proposed OPRA and OPMA legislation. My relationship with the NJLM, has given me a great opportunity to submit resolutions, for legislative consideration through the NJLM.
IN SUMMARY: I’m a lifelong conservative Republican, I believe in traditional conservative values. I take the honor of being elected by the people to be their leader and their employee very seriously. In the words of Gov. Christie “you have to connect with the people”.
A couple of key positions I have on some of the issues of today.
Number 1 - I am moderate conservative Republican and basically a constitutionalist. I follow in line with most of the ideology of the tea party. We all aren't going to agree on everything all the time, but I welcome open, civil debate and exchange of ideas.
Number 2 - I firmly stand behind the Second Amendment, and fully support the NRA.
Number 3 - One of my major political battles and campaign platforms is to fully support the Fifth Amendment, which is the protection of your private property rights. On behalf of the property owners in New Jersey, I intend to challenge the state of New Jersey's "regulatory takings" of private property without just compensation, that have accelerated over the past 30 years.
This is my job application to the residents, voters, and taxpayers, of legislative District 1. I assure you that if I have the honor of being hired for this job, my resolve to fight the battle in Trenton to improve the quality of life here in South Jersey will never waiver.
The GOP, “Grand Old Party,” first took roots in 1854 with a small group of dedicated abolitionists gathered to fight against the expansion of slavery and in hopes of starting a Party dedicated to freedom and equal opportunity.
